Learn about Northern Seminary

I have been teaching at Northern Seminary since 2000, and I love our community. If you have been itching to go to seminary to study Scripture, theology, history, or ministry, Northern is a great place for your education. Here are a few reasons why I love Northern.

  • Distance Learning: Northern’s programs are designed with convenience in mind. Seminary is not easy, but we try to make it work in the busy lifestyles of pastors, teachers, people who need to take care of their families, or people who just plain can’t move from their geographic location. Most courses can be taken online (Zoom) and otherwise courses meet in 1-week “intensive” format.

  • Faculty: We have leading scholars and gifted teachers who see students as a rich community to invest in. Our faculty are on the frontier of critical questions in ministry and theology, and are constantly processing their research and thoughts in publication and on social media.

  • The Great Tradition: Northern loves to be engaged in the urgent issues of our day, but we also stay anchored in Scripture and the Great Christian tradition, the heritage of theology that goes back to the beginning.

  • Diversity Matters: At Northern, diversity of culture, social location, gender, ethnicity, and denomination matters, not to check a DEI box, but because we all truly and passionately believe that we cannot understand the richness of God, God’s world, and God’s truth without everyone with a seat at the table of conversation.

  • The Focus: The Gospel and the Church of the Triune God. At Northern, we love theology, we geek out on new scholarship and new books, but the beating heart of our institution is the gospel of the triune God, lived out in the church, for the sake of God’s world. All roads of our courses and programs lead to that end. We are not a school of religion or a thinktank. We are a Christian seminary fixated on equipping pastors, leaders, and thinkers to invest in the church.

I’m biased. I love our New Testament programs. We have a Master of Arts in New Testament and a Doctor of Ministry in New Testament Context. Dr. Matthew W. Bates and I co-lead these programs and we love to see students going deep into Scripture and coming out with riches to share with other students and with their own ministries. Join us!
