Why Exactly Was Jesus Arrested and Condemned?

This is a key question in Brant Pitre’s fourth chapter of Jesus and Divine Christology (Eerdmans): “The Apocalyptic Secret.” And we will also discuss Ch5: “Crucified for Blasphemy.”

This is another one of Pitre’s core chapters in the book where he addresses Jesus's self-perception and divine claims and mission. Warning: this is a very long chapter, so there is no way we will be able to cover the whole thing. I will briefly survey the chapter, then focus on the issue of Jesus’ “crime” deserving crucifixion in Jewish eyes.
