What to Read This Advent Season (2024)
‘Tis the season, so here are some recommendations if you want to get into the Advent mood with some reading.
Advent Reading for Bible Nerds
This will illuminate what Mark does with the coming of the Messiah. Daub is a PCUSA minister.
At 400+ pages, this is not “light reading,” but Fleming is the master and this book will open your eyes to Advent in theological and biblical tradition.
This is not a holiday study, it is a serious academic work by the legendary Raymond Brown, but it is a classic and a worthwhile read (750+ pp!)
This is a German work, translated into English, but Lohfink is a widely recognized scholar and devoted Catholic. This book is wide-ranging, covering many topics, including Advent and Christmas.
This is an Advent study that focuses on Isaiah, but consciously avoids anti-Jewish/anti-Semitic interpretations of the Bible.
Advent Reading for the Family
A newer book (2023), very short, very well-written.
This is a series of short books, where NTW talks through the coming of the Messiah in various Scriptural texts.
I’m a sucker for good reading collections, this one includes some of my favorites: Barth, Bonhoeffer, Dorthy Day, Lewis, Moltmann, Nouwen, Underhill, Yancey, and more.
Tidball is a great communicator.
Very short, but vintage Brueggemann.

"Watch for the Light" is a favorite of mine!
Thanks a lot! I've been reading the Plough volume, plus "Shadow and Light" by Tsh Oxenreider and "Pauses for Advent" by Trevor Hudson. More devotional than scholarly, but good readings. The 2023 volume caught my eye! Thanks.
