This is a series called “Up to Date,” where I do a sweeping survey of the latest and greatest biblical commentaries. In 2020, I published a little book called The New Testament Commentary Guide: A Brief Handbook for Students and Pastors (Lexham Press, 2020). I’m proud of my “little orange book,” but a resource like this gets outdated. If you are looking for commentary classics and “best picks” I suggest picking up my book. In this Substack series though, I will be looking at what has been published in the last five years (2019-2024). [This week I extended it to 2018-2024)]
Important Recent Galatians Commentaries (2018-2024)

Craig S. Keener (Baker)
This is classic Keener—~900 pages and lots of detail on historical, cultural, and social context. Always worth consulting!
David A. deSilva (NICNT)
I have long appreciated the work of deSilva; his introduction to the New Testament (IVP) is phenomenal, and he is a well-rounded scholar with a speciality in socio-rhetorical insight. As a Wesleyan scholar (and a Catholic Epistles expert), he brings something unique to the study of Galatians. This is one of my favorite commentaries on Galatians and a gem in the NICNT series.
N.T. Wright (Commentaries for Christian Formation)
Wright has been writing on Galatians for decades. His NIB Romans commentary is fantastic, and we are blessed now to have a volume on Galatians. This is a rich theological commentary. It shouldn’t be the only thing you have, but it is good to have it!
Nijay K. Gupta (SGBC)
My Galatians volume came out in 2023, I loved writing on this monumental Pauline text, but it was intimidating as well. I learned so much and I tried to write it with busy pastors in mind.
Also, as a recent release (2024), check out my THEMES volume in the new series New Word Biblical Themes (Zondervan).
COMING SOON
Here are some commentaries on Galatians that are coming in the future. No clear timeline or release dates for these.
John M.G. Barclay (ITC series)
Erin Heim (Kregel Exegetical Library)
Esau McCaulley (Word Biblical Commentary)

Up next: stay tuned for new commentaries on Ephesians next week!
Perhaps you have a different source confirming Barclay's work on Galatians for the ICC series, but it looks like Christopher M. Tuckett's volume on Galatians is set to release in that series later this year: https://www.bloomsbury.com/us/galatians-9780567716408/
