Top 10 Academic Books to Get at SBL This Year (2024)
It’s that time of year! Halloween, yes, Thanksgiving, yes, but most importantly of all—academic conference season, and that means “books,” and that means “book discounts.” Publishers know we academics are very tempted this time of year, so they entice us with special offers and sales.
So: here are my top ten books to get at SBL this year! Now, you may be surprised I didn’t mention your personal favs, so please do leave comments with other exciting new books.
Without further ado (and with only brief comments)
A must-have!
Outstanding fresh discussion from Pitre. Follow my review series on Substack.
Long awaited from Walton! (I read it this summer, excellent)
Okay, I’m biased, but I love this book.
I can’t wait to dig into this one.
500+ pages of nerdy goodness from Longenecker and company!
Don’t forget this one! (See what I did there)
Another gem from Vanhoozer.
Leading scholars on the state of Jesus studies
Highly, highly, highly anticipated! This comes out in December, but probably (hopefully?) they will have it at SBL…
Which one(s) are you most excited about?
State of Old Testament Studies for sure. As soon as I saw Chip was involved I pre-ordered it. Poor guy had to sit through my MA thesis and my ThM thesis, least I could do is pick up his much-better-than-my-papers book
I already purchased New Testament in color. If you were pastoring a church, which of these would be immediately relevant? I know probably all of them to some degree, but I would think some more immediate than others. If that makes sense!
