New Word Biblical Themes: 3 Volumes Now Released
Serving as the editor of the New Word Biblical Themes series is a dream come true. I love the idea behind this series (see below) and I get to work with some of the best scholars and writers in biblical studies. Before I mention the three volumes now available, I want to explain what this series is all about.
Many of you will be familiar with the Word Biblical Commentary series, which enjoys a stellar reputation with classic volumes by the likes of James D.G. Dunn (Romans), Andrew Lincoln (Ephesians), Richard Bauckham (2 Peter, Jude), and David Aune (Revelation), and newer releases by Steve Walton (Acts) and Clint Arnold (Colossians). The WBC is famous for technical exegetical engagement and interaction with a breadth and depth of scholarship.
The New Word Biblical Themes (NWBT) is a supplemental series, designed to work alongside the WBC. The NWBT is meant to offer very short (100-200pp) studies of the top 4-6 key themes in each NT book. Short, easy to read, affordable, and aimed at students and pastors.
Galatians (Nijay K. Gupta)
The first volume to be released in the NWBT series was my Galatians volume, which was intended to serve as a model for authors in the series. My volume came out in April 2024. Now, for a major commentary series, volumes tend to be completed over a very long time, but since these volumes are short, we were delighted to get several manuscripts in in 2023 and 2024. So, it has been exciting to see a line-up of volumes going through the production process and awaiting release.
2 Corinthians (David Garland)
The second volume to be released was on 2 Corinthians, by the respected Corinthians scholar David Garland. David was truly the perfect person to write on 2 Corinthians, given his CSC commentary. This is definitely something worth having in your personal library.
Gospel of John (Dorothy Lee)
The latest book to release in this series is by Dr. Dorothy Lee, an world-renowned expert on the Fourth Gospel. Sherri Brown wrote this endorsement: “In her characteristically insightful manner, Lee contributes a powerfully evocative volume on the Gospel of John…Her love for this story is evident as she provides a gateway that leads readers of all levels deeply into John’s particular telling of the Good News.”
In this book, Lee covers (6) themes in pairs: (1) Word and Wisdom, (2) Life and Light, (3) Temple and Glory, (4) Witness and Believing, (5) Birth and Family, and (6) Law and Revelation.
Coming Soon (2025-2026)
And we don’t have to wait long for more volumes in this “collect the whole set” series:
Gospel of Mark, Christopher W. Skinner (July 2025)
Gospel of Matthew, Patrick Schreiner (Oct, 2025)
Book of James, Craig Blomberg (Feb 2025)
More about these excellent books closer to their release.
Thanks for this, Nijay. I really enjoyed reading your volume in this series on Galatians. Well done!
