Theme: Pauline Theology
The approach to Pauline studies that often goes by the label “Paul within Judaism” attempts to interpret the writings of the ancient Jewish man, Paul of Tarsus, apostle of Jesus Christ, as a participant within the diverse expressions of the Judaism(s) of his time, rather than as an outsider and opponent of the Jewish faith and the Jewish people. This approach to the apostle has gained considerable traction over the last decade and has numerous consequences for Pauline theology. In this study, the IBR Pauline Theology research group brings together leading voices in Pauline scholarship (and beyond) to shed fresh light on pressing historical, exegetical, and theological facets of both Paul and Judaism that remain central to the Paul within Judaism perspective. Key questions in this conversation concern Paul’s understanding of and adherence to the Jewish Law, Paul’s relationship to fellow Jews and attitudes towards the Jewish temple and synagogue, the interrelationship between Jews and Gentiles, the future and fate of Israel, and how Paul conceived of the salvation of Jews and Gentiles. By probing these important topics, this study aims to test the viability of the Paul within Judaism perspective and to make other significant contributions to the study of Pauline theology.
