In our book club on Jesus and Divinity Christology (Brant Pitre), we are looking at chapter 3: “The Riddles of Jesus’ Divinity.”

We are now getting into the heart of Pitre’s book, and his central question: Did Jesus make divine claims about himself? There is a secondary interest that also keeps bubbling to the surface in this book: does Jesus claim divinity for himself in the Synoptics? Most Jesus scholars dismiss the Gospel of John as too late, too theologically agenda driven, and not historically accurate. Jesus scholars tend to focus on the Gospel of Mark, and cautiously sift historical material from Matthew and Luke. In this chapter, Pitre questions this attitude and approach to the gospels.
