Come Study Biblical Greek with Me at Northern Seminary This Year
One of my absolute favorite things to teach is biblical Greek. I also regularly tell my students that studying the biblical languages was the most formative and most important thing I did in seminary.
That is why I am excited to announce that I will be teaching Greek this year at Northern Seminary (3 quarters, fall+winter+spring), and I am inviting you, dear reader, to consider taking this 3-course sequence. Northern Seminary is now a fully-distance learning environment with a mixture of Zoom courses and one-week in-person intensives in Chicagoland. This Greek set of courses is on Zoom so you can study from anywhere without having to travel or commute.
[Here is the seminary course schedule for dates, days, and times]
If you’ve always wanted to study Greek and haven’t found the right time, community, or platform, this might be the best opportunity for you.
Let me be clear—I am not presenting this because we don’t have enough students in the class. Quite the opposite, the class is pretty full, but I don’t mind adding a few more. Because we only teach Greek every other year, it won’t be taught again until 2027. I just want to spread the joy of Greek to even more people!
I am so excited about teaching this Greek course, because when I first arrived at Northern (2020), Greek was not a requirement for any degree program, and in fact a full grammar of Greek was not even taught. We had a one-quarter “tools” course that pointed students in the right direction, but didn’t offer the full foundation of Greek. We have now upgraded to offer a full year of Greek; students can take Greek and count it towards their program if they want to, but if they really don’t want to take Greek they can take other courses instead to complete their degree.
Feel free to reach out to me via direct message if you are interested in taking Greek. There are very few fully-online credit-earning ways to study Greek, so I am thrilled that Northern Seminary can be a crucial resource for so many. In a time when American seminaries across the board are dropping language requirements, I am encouraged that Northern Seminary has added it in a flexible way to serve Christian leaders who are committed to careful and fruitful study of God’s Word.
For those who are interested, we use Clayton Croy’s Greek textbook for (5) reasons
It’s succinct (less than 300pp)
It includes engagement with the NT and the Septuagint
It has good translation exercises (and an answer key for instructors available through Eerdmans)
There is now a companion reader for further study (see below)
Croy is very affordable ($28)
