Book Recommendation of the Week: The Transfiguration of Christ (Patrick Schreiner)
And a **FREE** resource for Subscribers
If you know me, you know I love BOOKS, especially academic books, and especially-especially biblical studies. So, I’m going to try to recommend (1) new-ish book a week.
Today we have a really good one—The Transfiguration of Christ, by Dr. Patrick Schreiner (Baker Academic). This is a robust exegetical and theological study on a much-neglected and often misunderstood passage that appears in Matthew, Mark, and Luke.
Schreiner is a recognized Synoptics expert who has worked extensively on Matthew. He is excellent at understanding and teaching about the whole of the gospel text, but lately he’s been interested in zooming in on a key passage or tradition (like The Ascension).
I gotta say—this book is spectacularly written. Schreiner argues that the Transfiguration plays a much more crucial role in the Gospel story than modern Christians often understand. And that Protestants wholly ignore the Transfiguration (when was the last time you heard a sermon on it?), while the Eastern traditions tend to give space for its importance. A good book draws you into the subject matter, and Schreiner’s work does not disappoint. He argues that the Transfiguration points to both the humanity of Jesus and the divinity of Jesus, and helps us to keep these in balance. BONUS FEATURE: Schreiner gives a lot of thoughtfulness and space to address theological hermeneutics—how to read the Gospels with the Church and the rule of faith. He wants to retrieve a distinctly theological approach to examining the Gospels.
