The State of Pauline Studies
Editor copies arrived!
I am so excited to see the (soon) publication of The State of Pauline Studies (Baker Academic). This is a sibling publication to The State of New Testament Studies, which was published a few years ago. There was simply too much scholarship on Paul that we could not cover in SoNTS, so we had in the back of our minds to do a follow-up book giving extensive space to recent developments in Pauline scholarship.
We address not only the latest scholarship text by text, but also some key themes and areas of interest.
This is one of those “must-have” volumes, and I am not just saying that because I am an editor! If this came out and I wasn’t involved, I would certainly be eager to purchase it, as a landmark publication with an excellent list of expert scholars.
My deepest thanks to Baker Academic, and my fellow editors and contributors, as well as endorsers.

Endorsements
“This volume is absolutely critical for anyone interested in the serious study of Paul, the Pauline correspondence, and Paul’s theology. The expert contributors, from diverse backgrounds and perspectives, document earlier and especially recent developments and their advocates, identify ongoing issues (and occasional hostilities!), and offer thoughts about the future of Pauline scholarship. A collection of substantive, wonderful, and at times lively essays—not to be missed.”
Michael J. Gorman, Raymond E. Brown Professor of Biblical Studies and Theology, St. Mary’s Seminary & University
“[T]hese brilliant colleagues give us an expert guide to the current state of play in research on Paul, topic by topic as well as letter by letter.”
Matthew V. Novenson, Princeton Theological Seminary
“Written by knowledgeable and exciting researchers, this easy-to-navigate resource provides a wealth of insight. Students will find both an overview of key issues and introductions to the major players, so that they can keep reading. For anyone who feels daunted when approaching the voluminous and intense field of Pauline studies, this is a great place to begin.”
Amy Peeler, Kenneth T. Wessner Chair of Biblical Studies, Wheaton College
“Studying Paul remains a vibrant, dynamic, bewildering, and frenetic enterprise. This erudite compilation is a most welcome moment of stillness for those of us unable to curb our ceaseless fascination with the apostle to the gentiles. These essays allow us to catch our breath, survey novel approaches, give attention to diverse voices, and reexamine the interpretive landscape of Paul, raising new queries and revisiting some old ones with additional clarity. In these pages, Paul the Jew, the Messiah-follower, the community builder, the social reformer, and the letter writer is reigniting significant questions for the academy, the church, and the world.”
Andrew K. Boakye, lecturer in New Testament, University of Manchester
“What’s been happening in Pauline studies, and where are we now in the study of the apostle Paul? Gupta, Heim, and McKnight have called together a group of leading Pauline scholars who guide us into the heart of contemporary discussions about the apostle. The book is an authoritative road map to current debates about key topics in Pauline studies and about each book in the Pauline corpus. An indispensable and highly recommended guide!”
Paul Trebilco, professor of New Testament studies, Theology Programme, University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand
